Finland

Most people traveling to Finland has a first impression of a lot of trees, an endless carpet of forest with lakes in between them. There are few small villages and towns as well. Therefore to their surprise Finland is not like that at all. They have a modern airport and no polar bears in sight. Finland is often called the "land of a thousand lakes," but there are quite a few more than a thousand. They have been counted and there are 187,888 lakes total. All of the lakes are connected by some kind of stream of water such as rivers, straits, and canals. Visitors can travel around them in any kind of boat from a canoe to an old fashioned steamboat. During the warmer months, June to August, visitors and locals can go swimming and boating in the waters of Finland. A network of steamer routes link most of the larger towns so people can get around the country a lot easier and more leisurely. When the lakes are frozen over they are a playground for skiers and skaters.

The Finnish way of life came from Argentina music that touch the Finnish soul. Anyone who thinks they know how the Finnish people live, they are most likely wrong. The Finnish life is always changing, about fifty years ago most people of Finland lived in the countryside. Now days they live in towns and cities with cottages in the countryside so they can escape on the weekends if they want to. Most people who live in Finland speak Finnish as their main language. There are some who can speak Swedish as well and some who can speak Sami. Most people can also speak a little bit of English so there is no need to worry about learning to speak Finnish. There is only one important word to know and that is Kiitos which means "Thank You." The food Finnish people eat come straight from the fields, lakes, and forests such as Salmon, whitefish, and Arctic char. There is also Duck and snow grouse, Reindeer and elk, blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries. They are all wild and good, as well as good for you.

Finland has a few towns that are from the 18th and 19th centuries, these towns are well taken care of and people still live and work in them. A couple of those towns include Porvoo and Rauma. In the countryside of Finland most buildings are made of wood whether it is a barn or a house. At the end of the 19th century there was Romanticism brought into Finland, there were many large buildings that were built like castle out of a fairy tale. Some buildings that show examples of this architecture is the National Museum and the main railway station of Helsinki. During the 20th century there were many famous architects brought to Finland such as Alvar Aalto, and Eero and Eliel Saarinen. As far as World Heritage goes, there are seven UNESCO World Heritage sites in Finland which include the Bronze Age Burial Site of Sammallahdenmaki, Fortress of Suomenlinna, The Kvarken Archipelago, Old Rauma, Petajavesi Old Church, Struve Geodetic Arc, and Verla Groundwood and Board Mill.
